A law to grant Uruguayan gay and lesbian couples the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts has been passed by the country’s Chamber of Deputies, carrying with 71 votes in favor out of 92.

On Wednesday, the Chamber of Deputies passed the law with 71 votes out of 92, following the bill’s approval in the Senate last week. This makes Uruguay the second Latin America country to permit such marriages.

The Executive branch is expected to promulgate the corresponding law within the next few days.
