According to the latest report by the Uruguay XXI Institute, Uruguay is one of the world’s top 10 exporters of blueberries, and ranked second as citrus exporter in Latin America. As well, the country is in the list of top 20 citrus exporters in the world.

Citrus fruits (mainly oranges and tangerines) are the main fruit exports, according to the detailed report, which also highlights the good performance of blueberries in recent years, currently Uruguay’s second fruit export.

Uruguay’s citrus exports have the European market as their main destination. The Netherlands are considered the main gateway to this market. However, in recent years Brazil’s demand has grown, reaching 9% of sales in 2012.

Regarding blueberries, Uruguay XXI explains that the constant production development in Uruguay is based on good land and climate. These competitive advantages place Uruguay in a better position than other producers in the world. Also, having reverse season crops for the European and the United States markets has enabled Uruguay to become one of the top 10 blueberry exporters in the world.
