The United Nations Development Programme’s recently published 2013 Human Development Report lists Uruguay among countries with a high Human Development Index (HDI). In fact, the country’s rating places it 51st in the global league table, remaining unchanged since 2011 and showing a rise of three places since 2007. Comparing Uruguay’s HDI score with other countries in the region, the country takes third place behind Chile and Argentina.

The UNDP also published an inequality-adjusted HDI score; here, Uruguay comes second in the region, with Chile taking the top spot.
