“You have no idea how many patients – babies – I transferred only to see them die en route. If I’d had this equipment, the story would have been different.” This was a comment made by a Swiss doctor who spent years working in Africa, speaking to a Uruguayan practitioner who presented a life-saving new «nitric oxide generator system» at a University of Geneva symposium on innovation.

Babies suffering from pulmonary hypertension can fail to get the oxygen they need, leading to asphyxia. However, nitric oxide can dilate the blood vessels in their lungs, allowing them to begin to breathe normally.

This is an expensive treatment, but a group of faculty members and researchers at the medical faculty (Udelar) have adopted the ground-breaking new device. A number of these scientists, working with others from the Clemente Estable research institute, are investigating the application of a natural substance called quercetin that appears to reduce the brain damage that oxygen deprivation can cause in newborns.
