The Carrasco International Airport licensee «Puerta del Sur» will begin the construction of a photovoltaic park during the second half of 2014, turning it into the first airport terminal which generates enough clean energy to cover its requirements.

The National Director of Energy, Ramón Méndez, claimed that “Carrasco will be the first airport in the world to operate on clean energy”, which represents “anexcellent way to promote the country”.

Méndez explained that the consortium plans to build a photovoltaic park – to generate energy from the sun – in a four hectare area located between the new airport terminal and Ruta 101, which will produce between 3 and 4 megawatts.

«Power will be generated for different purposes to supply airport facilities and internal transport. Thus the consumption of fossil fuels will be avoided», remarked the head of government, according to the Presidency of the Republic.

He stressed that even the bus transporting passengers from the aircraft will be electric. This day, in a not too distant future, 95% of the country’s electricity will be generated from renewable sources.

Diego Arrosa, CEO of Puerta del Sur, announced that the consortium will begin to install the photovoltaic panels during the second half of this year.

He claimed that if the experience is successful the model could be replicated in other airport terminals managed by the group.
