In the 2013-2014 cruise ship season 237 cruise ships arrived to Montevideo and Punta del Este, 6.3% more than in the previous period. 409,367 people (passengers and crew) disembarked in both cities. These tourists spent over US$ 19 million, representing an amount of US$ 47 per capita. In terms of origin, 45.5% of cruise ship passengers are Brazilian and 29% Argentine.

In the period between October 2013 and April 2014, 237 cruise ships arrived to Uruguay (121 to Montevideo and 116 to Punta del Este), according to the report prepared by the Research and Statistics Department of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MINTURD, for its Spanish acronym). 

The total number of cruise ships for the 2013-2014 season increased by 6.3% with regard to the 223 vessels that arrived to the country in the previous period.

409,367 people disembarked (183,523 in Montevideo and 225,844 in Punta del Este), 186,295 persons of which (45.5%) were from Brazilian origin and 118,850 (29.9%) Argentine.

Of the total number of people who disembarked 239,877 (58.6%) were women and 169,489 (41.4%) men. According to age, the largest group was formed by people between 30 and 64 years old: 296,124 (72.3%).

The report states, according to a total of 4,300 interviews conducted in both cities, that in Montevideo cruise ship passengers liked: «the people, cordiality and service» in 21.5% of the cases; while in Punta del Este 22.7% of respondents emphasized «beaches, the promenade and the coast.»

Cruise ship visitors’ expenditure reached a total of US$ 19,146,250 (Montevideo US$ 8,661,802 and Punta del Este US$ 10,484,448).

With regard to this figure, the retail (10,636,283; 55.6%) and food (4,889,107; 25.5%) sectors were the most prominent.

Per capita expenditure was US$ 47, 2.2% higher than the 2012-2013 season.
